Abstract

It is estimated that, in the United States of America, 1/3 of the adult population has one or more cardiovascular system disease and, in Brazil, it should be no different. The heart study is important to the development of new drugs and procedures to minimize the cardiovascular diseases effects. Analyzing isolated cardiac cells shortening is a way of studying the heart contractile activity. For that, it will be developed in this project an equipment to measure the cell shortening. To test its operation, experiments that modify the amplitude of cardiac cells shortening will be made: ²-adrenergic stimulation, caffeine application and modification of stimulation frequency. It is expected that the equipment will be capable of measuring the cell shortening with a high signal-noise ratio. (AU)
