Abstract

The pig industry is a large scale process of meat production, with increased technification and thus enabling greater production and quality. Several risk factors such as environmental, management and concentration of animals may predispose animals to respiratory diseases and causes serious economic losses. Swine pleuropneumonia (PPS) is a disease caused by the bacterial agent Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, very frequent in pigs, affecting animals and causing loss of weight, less gain of weight and development body. The prevention of the PPS avoids the condemnation of carcasses contaminated in abattoirs; thus, the PPS is extremely important economically and requires studies of losses in meat production, as well as the knowledge of its occurrence. This project proposes to diagnose A. pleuropneumoniae in fattening pigs by serology, histopathology, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and microbiological culture. It will be evaluated the impact of PPS, by comparison between infected and non-infected animals, of productive rates and carcass yields in abattoirs. (AU)
