Abstract

The work that will be undertaken at the IAG of the University of Sao Paulo has two main goals: investigating the origins of lenticular galaxies and, in the mean time, creating and testing new procedures and methods to be applied to the JPAS survey. The first project studies the colour gradient, and therefore the galaxy population, of a sample of lenticular galaxies, performing a bulge-to-disc light decomposition of multi-wavelengths galaxy images. The second project consists in comparing different kinematic tracers of the galaxy velocity fields and gravitational potentials, using the previously obtained light decomposition to assign the kinematic tracers to the correct component. In fact, the history of a galaxy is imprinted in its stellar kinematics, either at the moment of its formation or during a major disruptive event, as a merger. Finally, the third project focus on revealing star formation activities in S0 galaxies, generally considered to be old and red systems. A last episode of star formation could have occurred in the galaxy bulge, as a result of gas accretion during the fading of the S0 disc, or star formation could be visible in tidal streams, sign of the accretion of one or more small companions or of extragalactic HI clouds.
