Abstract

Despite the great efforts and progress made in the last decades, there are still many open questions in the field of galaxy evolution. Two of them are: what are the physical mechanisms responsible for the star formation quenching? In which environment morphological transformations happen? The answer to these questions require the detailed observation of the stellar populations and kinematics of galaxies which, together with the most recent theoretical models, can be used to constrain the physical mechanisms involved in the transformation of galaxies. Using new data sets produced obtained in new and promising instruments, including spectroscopic, photometric and interferometric observations, we plan to extend our previous works to shed light on the subject of galaxy evolution deploying a series of three sub-projects: 1) an extension of our previous work on the stellar populations of NGC 3311, a large cD galaxy in the center of the Hydra I cluster core, to provide further verification of the formation scenario we proposed which includes two phases of mass assembly; 2) The study of stellar populations of galaxies in groups observed with the T80-South telescope to provide a general tool for the determination of ages and metallicities from broad- and narrow-band observations; and 3) a study of interacting systems, combining Fabry-Perot (SAM-FP) and spectroscopic observations to determine the origin of flat and sometimes even inverted metallicity gradients and their relation with the properties of the gas that flows to the center of the system during a merger.
