Abstract

The hypothalamus is a structure of central nervous system responsible for control several body functions, such as, energy expenditure, body temperature, and food intake. Recent studies indicates an intriguing relationship between the hypothalamus and skeletal muscle metabolism, once that different hypothalamic nucleus are responsible, at least in part by glucose uptake, atrophy, insulin sensitivity and fatty acid oxidation by skeletal muscles. In fact, Jak2/STAT3 pathway in the hypothalamus plays an important role in the muscle metabolism, in particular on fatty acid oxidation. In addition, several evidences demonstrate that Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a myokine secreted by muscle contraction exerts its biological effects through the paracrine mechanism, involving Jak2/STAT3 signaling in numerous tissues, including hypothalamus. Therefore, IL-6 has been studied as a key molecule in relationship between the muscle and hypothalamus. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate whether the action of hypothalamic IL-6 is able to activate the fatty acid oxidation programm in the skeletal muscle of exercised rodents. In summary, we believe that this project will contribute significantly to understanding of connection between the hypothalamus and muscle in response to exercise.
