Abstract

The onset of inner core growth and its influence on the geodynamo is still a topic of debate in the literature, varying from the Archean until as late as the Cambrian. Paleointensity data can be used to test the proposed hypotheses since the nucleation of the inner core coincides with the compositional convection in the Earth's core, a process that is expected to stabilize the geodynamo. The present-day dataset for the Precambrian is still very scarce, with less than 50 paleointensity estimates between 3.50 to 0.50 Ga. In this project we will determine the paleointensity of the Earth' field for magmatic rock units of South America spanning the 2.67 to 0.52 Ga interval. These units are well-dated and have been studied for their paleomagnetism and presented stable magnetizations. All samples were already collected. Their paleointensity will be estimated using three different protocols: IZZI, single-crystals and multi-sample.
