Abstract The emergency toxicology can be defined as an area of toxicological analyzes whose main objective is to provide useful information which can assist the diagnosis and the subsequent treatment of poisoning. The necessity of fast and reliable analytical results is the most striking feature of the emergency toxicological analysis. The on-line solid phase extraction involves switching between two columns (extractor and analytical), into the chromatograph, and minimizes or even eliminates the handling of the sample, therefore it gives greater agility to the analysis. The use of saliva as a biological fluid for toxicological analysis has increased in the last decade, however citations of its use in the emergency toxicology are rare or even nonexistent. From the foregoing, this project aims to employ an automated solid phase extraction "on-line" followed by liquid chromatography with high efficiency diode array detection (SPE-HPLC/DAD) as an analytical tool for screening medications and drugs of abuse in saliva and plasma samples collected from intoxicated patients attended at the Poison Control Center of the State University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
