Abstract

Glandular trichomes are epidermal appendixes which produce biologically active substances important for the interaction between plants and the environmental, besides their medicinal and commercial values. Among Verbenaceae species, the morphological and functional diversity of glandular trichomes is great and more than one trichome morphotype can be present in the same organ of a same plant. Studies indicate a possible relation between the morphological variations of glandular trichomes and the chemical composition of the produced secretion. However, most of the studies involving Verbenaceae species concerns the chemical compositions of the secretion; structural and histochemical studies are scarce and restrict to a few species. Lantana camara possesses glandular trichomes that produce essential oils with repellent properties against mosquitoes of Aedes (Rich) Vahl. genus and antimicrobial activity promoting their use in the treatment of several deceases. This proposal aims to study the morphological, histochemical and ultrastructural features of the glandular trichomes in leaves of L. camara in order to establish a relation between glandular morphotype and composition of the secretion. For this, we will employ usual techniques in light and scaning and transmission electron microscopy. The results may subsidize researches related to the prospection of bioactive compounds produced by these plants. (AU)
