Abstract

Trichomes are plant epidermal structures on vegetative and reproductive organs that display variable shape, cytology and function. To date, there are more than 300 types of trichomes described and they occur on different organs of almost all families of angiosperms. The trichomes have taxonomic value, mainly the secretory ones. The Asteraceae family displays a great diversity in trichome types, and within this family, capitate glandular trichomes (CGT) are the most common, and a linear type of glandular trichome (LGT) has also been described to occur in some genera. Aldama is an important South American genus of Asteraceae, because several species have been reported to contain biologically and/or pharmacologically active compounds. In Brazilian Aldama species, three types of trichomes were reported: CGT, LGT, and a multicellular trichome (MT) with yet unknown function. The overall goal of this proposal is to study the ontogenesis, structure and ultrastructure of the LGT and MT, which have been shown as common in the genus. More specifically it is aimed to identify whether MT could also have glandular function. For this purpose, samples obtained from Aldama species in Brazil are being processed and they will be analyzed according to the usual histological techniques for TEM. The seed germination will be also performed to analyze the trichome differentiation, the molecular biology and the metabolite profile of these trichomes. (AU)
