Abstract

Retrieved from biomass, biodiesel has become a renewable energy option for countries seeking to reduce environmental impacts. Biodiesel from oil crops such as jatropha has the potential to strengthen family farming, since it favors the use of available regional. The transesterification reaction results mainly on biodiesel and crude glycerin, which can be found lipid residues, heavy metals and methanol. The purification process has high cost. In animal feed, glycerol (purified glycerin) can be absorbed by the rumen and small intestine and is used as a precursor of glucose in the liver. However, the glycerin purification process for obtaining glycerol has a high cost, it becomes necessary to quantify the presence of toxic waste as methanol in the crude glycerin in order to evaluate alternatives to its use. The objective of this work is to characterize the content of methanol present in crude glycerin obtained in the production of biodiesel from jatropha seeds and evaluate the in vitro effect of their use in ruminant feed.
