Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the development of understanding about pro-social lies in a sample of Brazilian children aged 7, 9 and 11 years old. Participants will be administered a task created by Genyue Fu and collaborators, translated into Portuguese and adapted for the Brazilian context. The task consists in the presentation of four different stories involving different dilemmas. The four dilemmas require children to decide if they should (or should not): (1) lie to help an individual and harm their group, (2) lying to help their group and harm an individual, (3) tell the truth to help an individual and harm their group, and (4) tell the truth to help their group and harm an individual. At the end of the presentation of each story, the researcher asks the child how he (she) would behave if he (she) were the main character. As Brazilian culture is considered individualistic, it is expected that Brazilian children should prefer the choices that directly benefit them or that favor their friends at the expense of their social group's interests.
