Abstract

This research intends to investigate the private Libraries in São Paulo between 1870 and 1890 inquiring the inventories post-mortem. First step is to establish a database to understand quantitatively the books' role among the inventoried goods. This lead toward a qualitative analysis divided in two: a survey to identify the foreign languages editions and the identification of books related to political literature. The questions around this work are which the profile (or profiles) of readers from Sao Paulo is and how much the books listed in the documentation are related with a transnational circuit of ideas in circulation, particularly, with the liberal and republican debates of that time.
