This project deals with concepts of nanotechnology and renewable materials. The aim of this project is to investigate the morphological and dispersion characteristics of cellulose nanocrystals in cellulose ester matrixes and to study the effect of these characteristics on the mechanical and thermal properties of biocomposites processed by extrusion. Surface modification of the nanocrystals will be conducted with the purpose of promoting the compatibilization between the cellulose nanocrystals and the polymeric matrix. Torque measurements versus time will be conducted during extrusion process in order to monitor matrix viscosity, degradation and any other changes that can occur during processing. Several characterization techniques will be used to analyze the structural and morphological characteristics of the biocomposites, as well as the nanocrystal surface modifications, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. In addition, thermal properties will be studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, and biocomposites mechanical properties will be investigated by tensile and impact tests.
