Abstract

The research project aims to study the transformations involving the College Square in São Paulo, in the period between 1889 and 1979, from a central problem: turning 180 degree position public about what is one of the most emblematic city, his birthplace and emblem of colonial spirituality. If in the 1890s the position was winning the secularization of the territory and hiding the traces Jesuit, six decades after the position was predominant for reconsideration, with the return of the land to the Jesuits for the reconstruction of religious complex in a process of unique des -secularization occurred during the height of modern languages in São Paulo.For this, the research project attentive to different agents and interest groups that focused on the College Square in these six decades: political leaders, intellectuals and media - actors largely ignored by historiography - the priests of the Society of Jesus and his supporters. Far from waging a debate purely confined to ideas such agents operated in constant contact with a popular imagery and even mythical eventually legitimize the Catholic and conservative alliance that triumphed in the return and reconstruction.
