Abstract

The guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahyba (Vell) Blake) is a native species of the Atlantic Forest, which natural distribution area comprises the coastal part of the Serra do Mar, from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul. It is recognized as a kind of rapid development and high productivity species. According to Mainieri and Chimelo (1989), the guapuruvu has a similar species, known as paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum Ducke), occurring in the Amazon, which produces wood very similar in the appearance, density and anatomical features. Pioneer studies on the technological potential of guapuruvu were developed by Richter et al. (1974), based exclusively on bibliographic information and findings in the area of the plantation. Highlighting the exuberant growth of the species, the authors indicated the possibilities of industrial utilization, although pointing that a complete study of the physical and mechanical properties as well as industrial testing process were lacking to take benefit of its form and branches. More recent studies were emphasized on anatomical and growth rings evaluation of wood (TOMAZELLO SON et al., 2004; CARVALHO, 2005; BORTOLETTO, belini, 2002; TRIANOSKI, 2010, among others). Due to its exceptional growth characteristics that qualify it as pioneer species in forest succession, has been also used in the mixed native species in the recovery of degraded areas (REITZ et al., 1979). In these situations, an aspect condition is the selection of species that may play their environmental role and also generate some financial return to the owner of the forest by a possible use for logging purposes (ENGEL; PARROTA, 2000). This work is part of a broader project (Project guapuruvu), conducted by a multidisciplinary team, which intends to present contributions to the definition of the technological potential of guapuruvu wood (S. parahyba) obtained from plantations in the recovery areas in Botucatu-SP. Its main objective is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of wood as recommended by NBR 7190/97 (ABNT, 1997), the radial variation of these properties and density - obtained by X-ray attenuation - and the characterization of different types of wood ( juvenile and adult) of guapuruvu, seeking help in defining the potential use of this wood.
