Abstract

After the final extinction of the African slave trade to Brazil, in 1850, the slave traders turned to inter-and intraregional trade, especially to answer the labor demand in the coffee provinces. Therefore, we see a significant increase in the intensity of the internal slave trade between 1850 and 1881, and especially in the last decade of that period. Uprooted from their homes and the domain policy which they were accustomed, slaves sold in interregional trade found new challenges in the places where they arrived. The objective of our proposal is to analyze the impact of internal slave trade in the lives of individuals who were sold and its significance for slaves' resistance and mobilizations against slavery in the Southeast Brazil, particularly in Campinas. We will seek to discern the ways found by bondsmen to survive and/or resist the trade, by the formation of new family and solidarity networks, and by strategies to get out of slavery (by manumission, flights or crimes).
