Abstract

Oedipus and Phoenissae tragedies of Seneca are the study object herein. This study reveals how the Latin text is organized poetically, by means of an expressive translation of such tragedies. In this wise, we aim at defining the main characteristics of stylistic idiom of Seneca in the corpus and reflecting on its transposition into Portuguese. Since such tragedies are the only ones that deal with the myth of Labdacids, they offer to us a complete approach concerning how Seneca treated the myth of Oedipus. Brodsky (1994) used the concept of stylistic idiom in 'The Child of Civilization', which concerns the stylistic affinity required for a translation to be equivalent to the source text. Accordingly, expressive features usually classified as figures of speech and expressive shrewdness in phonic, lexical, morphosyntactic and metric levels are observed in the source texts. Respecting the metrics in Latin, we highlight the iambic trimeters, which are present in most of the lines to be translated. We propose that such lines be translated by using Portuguese decasyllables, which is justified by an equivalence tradition from tragedians, eg. Antônio Ferreira and Manuel de Figueiredo, as well as from translators of tragic genre, eg Filinto Elísio, José Feliciano de Castilho, Sebastião Francisco Mendo Trigozo, João Cardoso de Meneses e Sousa and Trajano Vieira.
