Abstract

In recent years are large efforts of several institutions of research and development, and private sector initiatives, to develop technological solutions that increase efficiency and sustainability (economic, environmental and social) of the process of obtaining sugar, ethanol and bioelectricity from sugar cane. However, for the full sustainable production process be reached, the treatment and use of liquid streams generated in bioethanol production of first (1st) and second generation (2nd) must be considered. From one side, the problem of vinasse generated in large volumes during ethanol distillation and, the other side, the pentose liquor resulting from bagasse pretreatment constitute serious environmental problem, if no proper disposal. The anaerobic digestion (AD) is presented as a sustainable option for treatment, combining the environmental suitability of these wastes to energy generation by the hydrogen and methane production, in addition to the generation of value-added byproducts. This conception is appropriate for a biorefinery model by integrating ethanol production and energy recovery and by-products. However, the gaps about the AD of vinasse and liquor pentoses hinder the implementation and expansion of this technology. The barriers are even greater regarding to studies of microbial communities producing biogas, there is no information available in the literature about the structure and dynamics consortia operating in the digestion of these liquid streams. The metagenomic analysis of microbial consortia producing biogas is a new approach. Thus, this research aims to study the complex interaction of microorganisms in anaerobic digesters applied to energy recovery and environmental suitability of wastes generated in bioethanol production of 1st and 2nd generation, being an extremely important tool for basic research, as for applied research in the aspect of improving the renewable energy production and systems stability.
