Abstract

The problems of plant toxicity to cadmium (Cd) have been growing every year. However, the range of species that have some degree of tolerance to this metal is extremely limited, and there are still problems potentially harmful to agriculture and human health. In order to understand the parameters which allow a plant tolerance to Cd, this project will evaluate 9 accessions of tomato plants with different levels of tolerance to this metal through anatomical, physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis. There are no previous studies where the genetic variability of a species such as tomato (plant model that also has economic relevance) has been exploited to determine the mechanisms which allow their tolerance to Cd, especially using a set of variables distinct, but complementary, which will be evaluated by multivariate statistical methods, an approach that may improve our understanding about this subject. Such studies have primordial importance to deepen our understanding of tolerance to heavy metals, especially to Cd, and to support all the other works of this research line, while still allowing this information to be extended to other plant species.
