Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which there is impairment of memory and other cognitive and intellectual functions as well as behavioral disorders. Impacting on oral health, patients with AD present higher incidence of dental problems, fewer occlusal pairs and older dentures, which could affect chewing function. These functions impairment have been pointed as a risk factor for cognitive decline and the development of dementia in the elderly. As mastication is important for maintaining the cognitive function, this research project aims to describe objectively the masticatory function of elderly diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and to investigate the association between cognitive and chewing function in those patients. For that, 15 volunteers diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (experimental group) and 15 with no dementia (control group) will be selected. Chewing function will be assessed by the use of the chewable test material Optocal and the fractionation method by sieves. Cognitive performance will be evaluated by applying the Mini Mental State Examination and the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale. Collected data will undergo exploratory analysis and then appropriate statistical tests will be applied. It is expected to find association between cognitive decline and impaired masticatory function. (AU)
