Abstract

The aeronautic and orthopedic implant industries have in common, in different proportions, components subjected to extremely severe mechanical loads so that titanium alloys have played a prominent role in both. The interest in beta-type alloys, due to the higher levels of mechanical strength and the low elastic modulus, has significantly grown, although the recent development of these metals is responsible for the incipient published literature on the study of the correlation between microstructure and mechanical behavior. In Brazil, one of the major limitations for the study of beta alloys is associated to the necessity of overseas acquisition. Thus this project aims the design and microstructural characterization of Ti-5553 metastable beta alloy. After manufacturing through permanent mold casting from the dilution of conventional alloys and high purity alloying elements and processing by cold rolling, aging heat treatments will be employed to evaluate the retention of the beta phase and the formation of the alpha phase with these treatments.
