Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is mentioned in several countries as an incapacitating disease with high levels of functional impairment. Nowadays OA is considered one of the most important rheumatic diseases, being one of the most important causes of musculoskeletal pain in the elderly population. The impairment of the hands is very common in this population, approximately 30-52% of individuals have some degree of hands OA. The involvement of the hands occurs especially in the fingers, providing significant functional limitation, what limited the manual function. The treatment of OA was the combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological. Therefore, in rheumatologic rehabilitation of OA patients splints are indicated with the purpose of reducing inflammation and preventing deformities. Recommendations for the splint use in hand with osteoarthritis are centered on the trapeziometacarpal joint, and there is no recommendation for the use of splint for the interphalangeal joints affected by the disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a night splint for fingers II and III of the dominant hand in women with osteoarthritis of the interphalangeal and proximal or distal. The study design is a randomized controlled study, with blinded assessor and a follow-up of six months. Four assessments will be done during the study. The primary outcome is pain (EVA) and the secondary outcomes are strength of palmar and pinch, function (AUSCAN) and manual dexterity (pick up test). All participants will take part in all evaluations and an education group, about the disease and joint protection, but only the study group will make use of the splint every night. (AU)
