Abstract Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is known as a metabolic disease which affect 5% of people in the world. Characterized by fasting hyperglycemia (equal or higher than 126 mg/dL), involving alteration on carbohidrate, lipids and protein metabolism. Every year the number of diabetic people increases significatly, and also the research involving medicinal plants with properties hypoglycemic used by traditional medicine. However, in the literature there are few studies which identify the mechanism of action of these plants. Data in our laboratory showed that the treatment with crude extract of Bauhinia holophylla by 15 days, decreased the fasting glucose, lipds, and increased the content of hepatic glycogen. Furthermore, promoted the increase of expression of some protein involved in the insulin signaling pathway like AKT, p-AKT, PI3K and glycogen sinthase. Due to that, is very important a more detailed investigation about the mechanism of action of crude extract of Bauhinia holophylla. | |
