Abstract

The purpose of this research is the study of irony in the work of Machado de Assis, done through the investigation of the enunciation. Thus, we intend to see how the issue of the construction of the narrator's place and the narrative voice makes the definition of the ironic discourse outlines and the observation of an ironic ethos complex, through the examination of the enunciative characteristics of irony, the narrator and the free indirect speech, found in the published novel Esaú e Jacó and in its manuscript. This investigation aims to describe the irony, its effects and its functions, concerning Machado's literary production.
