Floral ontogeny, micromorphology and anatomy of Anthurium Schott (Araceae, Alismatales) and their taxonomic implications

Abstract

Anthurium comprises approximately 130 species in Brazil mainly circumscribed within A. sect. Pachyneurium and A. sect. Urospadix. Apart from those sections, A. sect. Tetraspermium is also important by the occurrence of its representatives - 50% of its species occur in Brazil. The infrafamiliar systematics is still discussed in Anthurium, especially due to circumscriptions based on morphological leaf features. Studies on floral ontogeny, micromorphology and anatomy are helpful to discuss the existence of valuable or useful taxonomic characters, shedding light on the systematics of the genus. The objective of the present study is to investigate: a) The floral ontogeny in ten species of Anthurium sect. Pachyneurium, Anthurium sect. Tetraspermium and Anthurium sect. Urospadix in order to verify developmental patterns within the sections; b) The floral micromorphology and anatomy in ten species of Anthurium sect Urospadix aiming to evaluate useful taxonomic characters for species delimitation; and c) The floral vasculature in ten species of Anthurium sect. Pachyneurium, Anthurium sect. Tetraspermium and Anthurium sect. Urospadix in order to verify its uniformity or not within these sections. The floral ontogenetic, micromorphological and anatomical characters will be assessed through conventional techniques of light, scanning confocal laser and scanning electron microscopies. With this study it is expected to contribute with the increase in knowledge of floral characters in Anthurium, leading to a better resolution of its infrageneric systematic.
