Abstract

Cachexia is defined as a multifactorial syndrome, with continuous decrease of fat and muscle mass, which can not be totally reverted by conventional nutritional therapy, leading to progressive functional impairment. Around 80% of advanced cancer patients are affected by the syndrome, which a direct cause of death in 22-40% of the patients. The etiology of cachexia is complex, there is still no consensus of which factors are responsible to trigger and mantain the state. A possible contributor is the white adipose tissue (WAT), which suffers several alterations, such as morfological reorganization and increased lipolysis, thereby releasing non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA). It hás been demonstrated that the type of NEFA determinates different effects in the promotion of inflammation. Thus, the objective of the present study is to establish whether NEFA released by adipocytes in cachexia contributes to local, and thereafter, systemic inflammation in cancer patients. (AU)
