Abstract

AbstractBackground: The controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) is important for the recruitment of a greater number of follicles in assisted reproduction techniques (ART), which is associated with better outcomes. On the other hand increases the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a serious complication. The ultrasound or in combination with assessment of hormone levels (serum estradiol) is mainly useful for monitoring the HOC to: early cancellation of cycles without proper ovarian response, avoiding unnecessary waste of resources; to determine the most appropriate time to trigger final follicular maturation, maximizing the number of retrieved mature oocytes, and to assess the cases of high risk of OHSS. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of monitoring COH by US with or without hormonal levels, for women undergoing ART. Additionally we aim to compare the efficacy and safety of different ultrasound methods for monitoring COH.SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group (MDSG) Specialised Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), DARE, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, and ClinicalTrials.gov. The final search was performed in November 2011.SELECTION CRITERIA: Only will be included randomised controlled trials. There will be no limitation on language, publication date or publication status. The data extracted from the trials will be combined for meta-analysis.
