Abstract

In this project we propose to continue a collaborative research between the groups of Prof. Sipahi and Prof. Zutic in guiding the research of Mr. Faria Junior. During his one year stay in Buffalo, we will focus on spin-dependent and optical properties of different nanomaterials with quantum confinement: semiconductor quantum wells, freestanding and core-shell nanowires and colloidal quantum dots. Revealing the electronic structure in the systems of interest, comprised of Si, Ge and III-V/II-VI semiconductors, provides already important clues and guidance for many spin-dependent and optical properties, for instance, optical spin injection and spin relaxation. This project has two important features: the understanding of fundamental properties of spin and light in nanostructures and, with this knowledge, the investigation of novel classes of spin-devices, extending the possibilities for spintronic applications. Specifically, this proposal will help to critically evaluate the feasibility of semiconductor spin lasers, spin interconnects and spin phenomena in colloidal quantum dots. (AU)
