Abstract

The purpose of this study will be identify possible adaptations electrolyte and acid-base balance in horses submitted to exercise and physical training associated with supplementation with carnitine and chromium. Fifteen horses Mangalarga Marchador breed, females, will be randomly assigned to three groups: one trained and receiving only diet (GD, n = 5), another trained and fed diet supplemented daily with 10 g of carnitine (CARG, n = 5) and finally fed diet and trained supplemented with 10 mg of chromium (GCR, n = 5). Diet is the same for all experimental groups. Incremental exercise tests (IET) will be performed on a treadmill to evaluate the effect of training and supplementation with carnitine or chromium. The fitness program will be performed on a treadmill three times a week, and automatic walker, twice a week, with a total duration of six weeks, in the mean intensity of effort related to 70% of the lactate threshold (70% LL).Venous blood samples will be collected before, immediately and 30 minutes after the effort test. To study the possible changes in acid-base homeostasis will be quantified variables venous blood gas and electrolyte as hydrogen potential (pH), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), base excess (BEecf), bicarbonate (HCO3-), total carbon dioxide (tCO2), oxygen saturation (sO2%), sodium (Na +), potassium (K +), chloride (Cl-) ionized calcium (Ca + +) and strong ion difference (DIF.)
