Abstract

The DMRT3 gene has been described as the major gene to serve in determining gait phenotype in several horse breeds. The A allele of SNP 22999655C>A of DMRT3 was appointed as responsible for this feature. In the Brazilian breed Mangalarga Marchador, which features two gait patterns with well-defined characteristics, AA and AC genotypes were associated with marcha picada and the CC genotype to marcha batida. Thus, in this race the A allele of the march was only related to a type of gait, marcha picada. In genome-wide association study (GWAS) case-control recently conducted in FMVZ, Unesp, Botucatu, it was possible to demonstrate that, contrary to what occurs with marcha picada, marcha batida appears to be controlled by more genes. However, due to the small number of animals used in this study (N = 48: marcha batida N = 28; marcha picada N = 20), it was not possible to identify genomic regions associated significantly with marcha batida. Based on the above, the main objective of this research will be carried out, from larger sample of animals, the prospect of genomic regions containing possible genes responsible for phenotype marcha batida in horses Mangalarga Marchador. They will be genotyped with Equine SNP70 BeadChip, 192 horses (96 march beat and chopped 96 march), duly recorded by the Genealogical Registry Service of the Brazilian Association of Mangalarga Marchador Breeders (ABCCMM). Thus, the GWAS case-control will be reappointed with 240 animals, and 124 marching beat and 116 bite march. Blood samples of the animals will be collected during the National Exhibition of the race, to be held in June 2017 in the city of Belo Horizonte-MG. The presence of full brothers will be avoided in the sample. (AU)
