Abstract

The skin is the most exposed organ to solar radiation, thus the most affected by its harmful effects. Even exhibiting protection mechanisms such as the stratum corneum, sweat and melanin, the effects of UVA and UVB radiation of sunlight cause skin lesions with formation of erythema, pigmentation and possible DNA damage, leading to cancer. Therefore, the use of sunscreens is needed. Sunscreens are substances present in formulations with photoprotective ability to absorb or reflect UV radiation, protecting the skin. However, some filters have low stability in the presence of this radiation, which may compromise the quality, safety and efficacy of these products.The laws have faulty regulation in this regard, being an area with a growing number of researches. The use of mass spectrometry as an analytical tool with high sensitivity and specificity, has been giving new directions to research analysis of sunscreens. With the advent of Cosmetomic, a new analytic platform that employs MALDI-MSI in direct analysis of commercial cosmetic products, it becomes interesting to develop methodologies that can identify degradation marker molecules in complex matrices, such as sunscreens, being a useful tool for quality control of these products, and reduction of risks to consumers.
