Identification of the structuring elements of free or sparsely populated areas in Brazil: the case of the cities studied by the national network of research QUAPÁ-SEL

Abstract

The research seeks to analyze the elements that explain why certain urban areas tend to remain free or, as regards the territorial configuration of a given city, as some areas sparsely populated. The theoretical-empirical analysis comprises two steps. The first identifies free or sparsely populated areas in Ribeirão Preto, Campinas, Sorocaba and Vitória. The cities represent the four types of urban fabric obtained with the research "Free space systems and the Constitution of the contemporary public sphere in Brazil- QUAPÁ - SEL I", that studied 23 cities. The second stage corresponds to the qualification: 1) structurally free or sparsely populated areas; and, 2) free or sparsely populated areas. The analysis of results develops explicit factors that underlie because the structurally free or sparsely populated areas tend to stay, as well as those that indicate a cyclical context of transformations that can result in the loss of such attributes. The empirical approach focuses on the identification of these classes of areas through the georeferencing of the Census Demographic variables of 1991, 2000 and 2010 and research by the documentary base produced by QUAPÁ-SEL I. The theoretical basis comes from the urban transformation process underlying concepts such as macrourbanization, urbanization of the area, scattered and extensive urbanization.
