Abstract

There are two main neurogenic areas in the central nervous system of adult mammals: the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of hippocampus, which produces neural stem cells that differentiate into neurons that integrate the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle, in which neural stem cells give rise to neuroblasts that migrate to the olfactory bulb, where they differentiate into interneurons. In pathological conditions, SVZ-derived neuroblasts migrate to the injured area in an attempt to repair the cell population. This migration is thought to be guided by some soluble molecules secreted by cells near the injury. It was recently demonstrated that Galectin-3, which is necessary for the migration of neuroblasts to the olfactory bulb in healthy conditions, also participates of neurogenesis events in stroke and multiple sclerosis. Preliminary data showed that Gal-3 is also upregulated in TBI, so our main question is how does Gal-3 regulates neurogenesis and migration of neuroblasts in TBI. (AU)
