Abstract

The present work aims to study structural changes that can be made in the structure of the polymer chitosan. These modifications are given by the synthesis of diverse polymer by the N-alkylation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with different chitosan materials. We also intend to study the complexing capacity of metal zinc with the products of the transformations. The completion of the proposed work can lead to materials with potential application in the solution of environmental problems such as the treatment of industrial waste water. Water pollution with heavy metals from industries, such as Cd, Zn, Ni, Al, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb and Cr have generated great concern due to the toxic effect exerted by these elements when they are above the permissible concentrations, become unsuitable for human consumption and cause risk of death to microorganisms that live in these waters. Against this environmental problem, the chitosan polymer can be used in the treatment of industrial effluents as a complexing agent, because besides the ability to chelate metal ions, this polymer does not produce toxic waste. The use of biopolymers based on chitin and chitosan as starting materials for the preparation of organic or hybrid materials potential results in great interest because of the different properties of biopolymers such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity, which contribute to a variety of applications in biomedical, agricultural, food, biotech, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, among others. The chemical modification of the side chain of the polymer chitosan promotes the formation of polymeric derivatives, whose properties can be studied seeking to expand the applications of the polymer. Therefore, the design is aimed to study the chemical transformation of the polymer chitosan for the synthesis of new polymeric materials that will be studied as adsorbents metal. To confirm the synthesis of polymeric compounds spectrometry and spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR and solid state NMR will be used. The technique of UV-visible, atomic absorption spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy rays will be employed in this work to verify the formation of polymeric complexes.
