Abstract

Pollen is the major source of nutrients essential for the development of honeybees Apis mellifera. The quantity and quality of pollen consumed are directly responsible by the development of hypopharyngeal glands in worker bees. However, each pollinic type offers specific nutritional support. Nevertheless, the apitoxin harvesting alters the swarm activities and communications, which may affect its development. The goals of this project will assess how palynology, the chemical composition of pollen and bee venom can influence the development of hypopharyngeal glands (acini size) in honeybees Apis mellifera L. Thus, the bee pollen will be harvested each 15 days, for 12 months period, from 10 experimental hives, which will have installed in their entrance a front pollen collector with 800g of capacity and 68.0 ± 23.7% of efficiency. The botanical origin identification of pollen samples will be done through palynological analyzes, following the acetolysis method. The chemical composition must be identified by bromatological analysis contend of: total protein, lipid, ash, vitamin C and total flavonoids. Every fifteen days the apitoxin will be harvested of 05 experimental hives in the early morning at 09:00 am, lasting an hour, trough electrical collector, and will be performed for one year. For the evaluation of the hypopharyngeal glands development will be collected monthly, 2 bees from 06 hives, which will be euthanized and have their heads processed for morphometric analysis in resin, stained with hematoxylin-eosin. With digital camera attached to the microscope and an image analysis software, the diameter of the acini lumen of the hypopharyngeal glands will be determined. The results will be compared by Anova followed by Tukey Test to check differences between means. Be considered statistically different when p<0.05. (AU)
