Abstract

Within the gaseous pollutant compounds, hydrogen sulfide and its derivatives -such as reduced sulfur compounds (RSC) - play an important role in environmental issues mainly due to their high toxicity, reactivity and corrosive proprieties. Several agencies established limits to emission of H2S in air, ranging from ppm to low ppb. In order to enable the monitoring of hydrogen sulfide in air, analytical methods must have reliable and accurate results. Optical sensors appear particularly advantageous in terms of equipment cost, simplicity, easy of operation, and potential for miniaturization. Indirect chemical sensing methods, which are usually based on chemical reactions with dyes immobilized within polymeric matrices have been used to detection of H2S. However, they are mostly based on toxic metals and, furthermore, its synthesis contains many steps and toxic compounds are generated. The use of luminescent palladium complexes has not been using as hydrogen sulfide reagent, although the high affinity between palladium and sulfur. Moreover, the potential use of the reagents immobilized in solid supports has not been evaluated in H2S sensors. Here, the use of palladium compounds as reagent to H2S and RSC detection will be evaluated. Besides, the compounds will be immobilized in a suitable solid support in order to have a gain in performance and enable in situ analysis. (AU)
