Abstract

The technological development of the media - emphasizing the internet and social networks - appears to be linked to new possibilities of connections between people and between them and information. In this scenario, it is remarkable the growth of political forms of participation that are supported by the new technologies of information and communication, and that clash with traditional models of operation. The most recent social movements today are using the internet as an instrument for awareness, organization and engagement, and a platform that is showing is showing its expressiveness are the petitions sites. This research project looks to the contemporary relationship that has been established between the internet and politics, and to investigate this issue, we propose an empirical study of e-petitions websites. The intention is to study, through interviews with the creators of these platforms of online activism and those who use them, and also the analysis of the content of the sites themselves, how was the beginning and the growth of this kind of action, especially in the Brazilian context. Authors as Manuel Castells, Tiziana Terranova, Boaventura de Souza Santos, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri will be used to discuss the relationship between the current social and political transformations and digital media. This project aims to understand how the Internet is linked to political participation and possible new action models for citizens, especially among the younger portion of the population. (AU)
