The construction of tragicomedy in Spanish Golden Age: historical and dramaturgical analysis as (assumptions to research a baroque or barroquista cinema)

Abstract

The research proposed in this project is intended to analyze the construction of tragicomedy genre in the period known as Spanish Golden Age through the following plays: Lope de Vega's "Fuenteovejuna", "El mejor alcalde, el rey", "Peribañez y el comendador de Ocaña" and "El caballero de Olmedo"; Guillén de Castro's "Las mocedades del Cid"; Ruiz de Castro's "La verdad sospechosa"; Tirso de Molina's "El burlador de Sevilla"; and Calderón de la Barca's "El alcalde de zalamea", "La vida es sueño" and "La dama duende".For such purpose, it will be established and studied issues related to the history of literature and drama, from the birth of the concepts of tragedy and comedy to the theoretical characterizations of the Baroque, period that covers the studied production, in order to consolidate concrete referential that will guide the play's analysis. At the same time, it will also be analyzed the historical formation of Spain until the studied period, always bearing in mind the Spain theater's history in its economical and creative constitution. After knowing the historical and theoretical contexts, it will occur the play's analysis, which will focus on its themes, structures, plots, characters, and other dramaturgical elements not only based on inner features but also backed by comparisons with other studied works in order to better comprehension of the tragicomic composition. Thus, by gathering the results of the historical and dramaturgical studies, it is intended to, at the research's end, establish context, origin, characteristics, evolution, and signification of the tragicomedy in the Spanish Golden Age, which will provide subsidies for possible further research to investigate baroque dramatic features in cinema.
