Abstract

Teleostei exhibit great plasticity in the sexual expression and the condition of hermaphroditism among species of different orders is frequent. During the sex inversion, occurs gonadal tissue degeneration from the first sex. After, occurs substitution, development and maturation of the germinal tissue from the opposite sex. The changes from the germinal epithelium are extensively studied, but significant changes also occur in the interstitial compartment. These are little studied. When they are associated with changes from the epithelium, become the main responsible by the morphological and functional changes of the gonad. These changes in gonadal tissue involve extensive remodeling of the interstitial tissue. The metalloproteinases (MMPs) exercise important modulation on extracellular matrix, therefore, the MMPs can be involved in this process during sexual inversion in Teleostei. Due to lack of information about the action of the MMPs in remodeling gonadal in fish, and knowing the necessity of obtain new mechanisms for manipulation sexual, the present study aims to evaluate the action of MMPs in tissue remodeling and her action in the morphological and physiological changes of the gonads, during sex inversion in two species from Teleostei: Danio rerio and Synbranchus marmoratus, which present juvenile and sequential hermaphroditism, respectively. In addition, the proposal intend to establish a comparative analysis on the role of new interstitial cells - the telocytes - not described for Teleostei yet, during the sexual determination between these two species.
