Abstract

The main purpose of this research is the translation from French to Portuguese of six short stories written by French contemporary writer Philippe Delerm, extracted from his book La première gorgée de bière et autres plaisirs minuscules (DELERM, 1997): "La première gorgée de bière" (p.31); "Un banana-split" (p.42); "Le cinéma" (p.55); "Le pull d'automne" (p.57); "Un Roman d'Agatha Christie" (p.72) e "La bicyclette et le vélo" (p.88). Subsequently, with the support of the experience acquired in the process and the knowledge of literary translation and the writer's style, a discussion and a critical commentary of the same short stories translated in Brazil (DELERM, 2000) will be established. The intention of this analysis is, mainly, to observe how much the translation kept of the original and to point out some of the choices the translator has made. In the research will also be included discussions about literary translation, its specificities and the obstacles the translator tends to come across. We also intend to point out the many difficulties that come from attempting to transpose and preserve the cultural references and markers to a different cultural context.
