Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a lethal disease caused by absence of dystrophin affecting one in every 3500 males. The pre-clinical model widely used to study this disease is the mdx mice. These animals have complete absence of protein expression of dystrophin in their organism. Low-power phototherapy (with lasers and LEDs) has been widely used to promote tissue regeneration, decreasing inflammation and pain relief, and it has been showing also positive results in delaying skeletal muscle fatigue in animals and humans, improving biochemical markers related to skeletal muscle recovery when this therapy is applied previously to exercise. Phototherapy seems, therefore, to act as a protective therapy to muscular tissue. With these factors in mind, this project aims to analyze gene and protein expression of different inflammatory and muscular markers, as well as analyze morphology and muscular function of mdx mice. For such, will be used different experimental groups that will be treated with phototherapy for 14 weeks. (AU)
