Abstract

This project aims to describe, from the perspective of Dutch Functional Grammar tradition, the modal construction "tener que" on data from Iberian spoken Spanish. Considering the classification of modality proposed by Hengeveld (2004), which takes into account the target of evaluation (part of the utterance that is modalized) and the semantic domain of evaluation (modal values) this study investigates the modal values expressed by the construction "tener que" and the contextual elements that favor the use of one modality or another.
