Abstract

Mangroves are ecosystems that represent unique morphological and physiological characteristics in which species form population structures that follow the one-dimensional stepping-stone model. This structure allows us to infer that these systems are discrete and isolated habitats, indicating limited gene flow among the populations of the species that inhabit them. Studies on population structure allow the establishment of biodiversity conservation strategies, revealing which geographic areas harbor the greatest genetic diversity within the population of a particular species. Therefore, this project aims to analyze the population variability of crab species living in mangrove areas of the North Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico and the Florida peninsula) by means of morphological and molecular analyzes, using mitochondrial 16S and COI as well as the nuclear H3 markers. It is planned to thus assess the hypothesis of existence of stepping-stone model among mangrove crab populations by means of quantifying intraspecific variability of these species. Evidence of similarities and differences between population sand relationships between them will help identify genetic diversity of each species and the possibility of population structure. (AU)
