Abstract

This project will examine legislation on forced labor in the Portuguese colonies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The analysis will focus on existing legislative data, which will be be entered into the Database "Legislation: Work and Workers in Portugal, Brazil and the Portuguese Colonial Africa" (http://www.ifch.unicamp.br/cecult/lex/web/ ). In addition to collecting and referencing information on legal texts, the student will produce a comparative essay on the forms of forced and contract labor in different colonial contexts (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau).
