Abstract

The Wasteland in northeastern Brazil and the Southern Interior of Portugal are important divisions for the analysis of regional and economic development, with relevant functions thanks to its peculiarities. The role of free markets, agricultural activities, regional enterprise initiatives and emerging industries, are crucial to understand this development, especially in the Brazilian case. We seek to analyze the regional development of Portugal, taking as its starting point the Southern Interior (Beja), as Coast / Interior strongest opposition in the country regarding the regional and economic development. The Wasteland sub-region is in accordance with this analysis, highlighting the states of Alagoas and Sergipe (with the cities of Arapiraca and Itabaiana respectively). To this end, we are focusing on a historical and current reality research, looking for understand the concept of economic development developed by Rangel (2012), and the notion of regional division, industrialization and open market, from Alegria, Teixeira e Umbelino (1990), Andrade (1998, 1974), B Raudel (1998); Caspar (1986, 1993) Mamigonian (1965 and 2009) Medeiros (1978), Mello (1980), Ribeiro (1970), Santos ([1996] 2008), Santos and Silveira (2010) among others. The Wasteland of Alagoas and Sergipe in northeastern Brazil and the Southern Interior of Portugal, have highlighted cities by becoming dynamic economic centers of great importance, with growth seen not only in their own cities but also in the region to its surroundings. Treading this path, we quote the city of Beja (located in the down Alentejo, in the Alentejo region) that somehow influence the sub-region and the interior it belongs to, as well as Arapiraca/ AL (main city of the Wasteland, big mall and services) and Itabaiana/ SE (typically Wasteland city, having a great importance in agricultural products branch).
