Acute effects of aerobic exercise on renal function in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease

Abstract

In clinical practice, the term Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is used to generally define the disorders associated with the renal system which are currently considered as a public health problem both in Brazil and worldwide. It is well documented that the risk of death, hospitalization, and cardiovascular events are greatly increased in the presence of CKD. Considering this fact, exercise emerges as a therapeutic alternative for this population, thus warranting further investigation on its effects on renal function. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise on renal function in non-dialysis chronic renal failure patients. The subjects selected to participate in the research will be divided into three groups according to their stage of CKD: a) patients in stages 1 and 2; b) stages 3 and 4; c) individuals with normal renal function without hypertension and diabetes. All of the patients will perform 30 minutes of exercise on a treadmill in an intensity correspondent to the first ventilatory threshold (predetermined by a maximal graded exercise test). Blood samples will be collected before, immediately after exercise, and during the recovery period (i.e., 30 and 60 minutes after exercise). Urine samples will be collected before exercise and 30, 60, and 90 minutes after exercise. The GFR will be determined by the clearance of creatinine, that is, by the ratio of the concentration of creatinine in the urine and the serum concentration multiplied by the urine volume for the four corresponding samples of blood and urine. The dependent variables will be compared by two-way ANOVA with repeated measures (time x stage of the disease). The level of significance will be set at p < 0.05. (AU)
