Abstract

The aldehydes of low molecular weight, specifically formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, are wide interest from a toxicological view due to adverse effects on human health. On the environmental aspect, these compounds have received much attention because of its influence on the processes of photochemical smog. The evaluation of the concentration of these pollutants and their control have led for the need of developing new methods and pre-concentration systems for the collection and determination of these compounds in air samples in different environments. The goal of this project is create a standard atmosphere of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde to evaluate the collection efficiency of these pollutants in two different systems of pre-concentration. A microvial containing 1 ml of adsorbent solution and solids absorbents cartridges (C18) impregnated of reagent solution are evaluated as pre-concentration systems. Like derivatizing agents will be assessed the performance of MBTH (3-metilbenzotiazolinona-2-hydrazone) and FHSA (4-sulfonic acid phenylhydrazino), for the collection of standard mixture. The determination of the species of interest will be made by the technique of capillary electrophoresis (CE). (AU)
