Abstract

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune disease associated with physical disabilities that present a significant risk to oral health for various reasons, such as TMJ involvement, difficulty opening the mouth, reduced mandibular growth and masticatory function, upper limb functional disability that affects oral hygiene, use of oral medications containing sugar and difficulties in dental care. Objective: To evaluate salivary parameters of children with JIA compared with a control group. Methods: Children with JIA (n=36) of both gender, aged 6 to 12 years old will be enrolled in the experimental group. A control group will consist of 36 healthy subjects matched for gender and age. The whole saliva stimulated by chewing Parafilm® was collected for determination of activity of ±-amylase and salivary peroxidase, the concentration of total protein, sialic acid, calcium, phosphate and non-enzymatic antioxidant system. Hypothesis: Previous results of our study showed that patients with JIA had higher oral hygiene index (OHI) without affecting the gingival index and presented no lesions in soft tissue. A hypothesis of this study is that individuals with JIA may show changes of salivary parameters biological properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, digestive and lubricant.
