Abstract

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in relation to lean tissue. Currently, it is a global epidemic and a major public health problem that affects both developed as well as developing countries. The heart is composed essentially of myocytes, vessels and interstitial collagen matrix. The types of collagen found in the heart are predominantly types I and III, whereas the type I accounts for approximately 80% of myocardial total collagen. The collagen in stable condition, contributes to the maintenance of architecture and cardiac function. However, in response to stimulus caused by mechanical or neurohormonal agents, collagen may change, affecting the movement myofibril. In animal experiments, rats submitted high-fat diet often develop obesity, but even maintaining the same conditions, some animals do not become obese and are called obesity resistant rats. Due to the absence of studies of myocardial collagen I and III in obesity resistant rats by high-fat diet rich in saturated fatty acids, the purpose of this study is to quantify the fractions of myocardial collagen I and III in obesity resistant rats treated for 30 weeks saturated fat diet.
