Abstract

This research intends to analyze the manorial architecture in the cities of Parahyba Valley in the nineteenth century. Although there are many studies concerning the political and economic relevance of the Parahyba Valley to the Brazilian empire, its urban spaces have been neglected, remaining all the attention on the plantation world. On the other hand, the studies on architecture and urbanism are usually focused on building techniques and formal aspects. This research intends to analyze the society of landlords and slaves through its material, visual and special dimensions, with the purpose of understanding the role played by architecture in the Brazilian imperial society.
